Diligence is a vital attribute in our daily lives and endeavors, especially in business and the workplace. The scriptures declare, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank” (Proverbs 22:29). This verse highlights the heights that diligence can take a person to. But what exactly is diligence? Diligence simply means working with care and effort, doing things with great zeal while paying serious attention and showing caution to avoid damage or loss.
Inculcating diligence in our business practices is essential. It is an act that must be embraced for our businesses to grow. From the inception of a business to its day-to-day operations, diligence is required. Everything that has life is bound to grow, and since a business is a living entity, it requires diligence to thrive. The capital you use to start your business is a seed you sow, and through diligence, that capital must grow.
It is disheartening to see many businesses folding in our present time. While people often attribute this to various factors, a closer examination reveals that a lack of diligence is often the root cause of the problem. Diligence is of paramount importance in business. The fact that some businesses fail does not mean that others are not flourishing. In most cases, hard times are no excuse for setbacks in business.
Traits of Diligence
By traits, we mean the characteristics or qualities a person must possess to be diligent. These include care, effort, and zeal.
Care: Care has many meanings, but in the context of business, it refers to serious attention and thought, caution to avoid damage or loss, and protection. Care should be evident from the very start of our businesses, reflected in our decision-making, budgeting, and the execution of our business plans and commitments. The idea behind care in business is to avoid loss or damage. The goal of every entrepreneur is to make a profit, and care plays a vital role in profit-making. We must be protective and mindful of our businesses, ensuring our attention is focused on all aspects of the business to foster growth and success. As the scripture says, “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands” (1 Thessalonians 4:11).
Effort: Effort is another critical trait of diligence. It involves the use of energy in running a business and the capacity for all business activities. Effort can also be attributed to the zeal, passion, and enthusiasm a businessperson must have to run their business. The scripture advises, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11). Imagine a person running their business with some measure of laziness; such a person is simply creating room for little or no growth in their business. It is not only about showing care in business; effort is necessary to complement the care being shown. Even with all the capital in the world, without the drive, your business is going nowhere.
Diligence in business is crucial to its success and growth. There is hardly a business that has flourished without it. Removing diligence from a business is as good as closing or crumbling it. Every entrepreneur needs it. The scriptures say, “He will serve before kings; he will not serve before officials of low rank.” Therefore, in all business transactions, display a high level of diligence—even in the smallest of endeavors—and your business will grow before your eyes, and your profits will multiply greatly.
