The Problem-Solving Attitude

“Necessity,” they say, “is the mother of invention.” The idea of delving into business primarily for making money is not ideal. There must be a desire to solve an existing societal problem. Surrounding us are countless problems or unmet needs. If we allow making money to be our primary concern, we end up repeating what others have already done to meet people’s needs. This duplication of ideas is evident everywhere. Ask yourself this question: What is the undiscovered solution to an existing problem in society? By pondering this question, God will certainly provide an answer. It was the desire for a better source of light that drove Thomas Edison to invent the first light bulb. It was the need for faster transportation that propelled the Wright brothers to invent the airplane. Similarly, the desire for a better and more hygienic way of packaging water led someone to invent sachet water. Believe me, the wisdom for invention comes from God, for the scriptures say, “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence and find out knowledge of witty inventions” (Proverbs 8:12). The first thing to note as an entrepreneur is the desire to solve an existing societal problem.

The second essential quality you need is passion. Passion means great enthusiasm. You must have great enthusiasm for whatever line of business you are in. Passion will drive you on, even when you face setbacks or are not experiencing much success. It pays to do something you are passionate about.

The Place of Calmness

Calmness is the condition of not being excited or agitated—in other words, the state of being still. As an entrepreneur, calmness is crucial. It provides two important qualities: good thinking and good strategy.

Good Thinking: Good thinking involves prudence, which is all about carefulness and foresight. The scriptures say, “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence and find out knowledge of witty inventions” (Proverbs 8:12). This means that the more you engage in good thinking, the more of God’s wisdom you will receive to guide your business. Good thinking also generates great ideas for your business. There is a Japanese saying that goes, “Good thinking, good prudence.” Good thinking is essential for your business to grow and flourish.

Good Strategy: Having a good idea is not enough; you need a good strategy for your idea to succeed. Strategy involves planning and directing the entire operation of your idea or dream. The question now is: What plan have you put in place for your idea? Your idea might be a product that people are not yet aware of, and your strategy should include effective packaging. People are often influenced by what captures their attention. Another function of strategy is directing. Avoid handing your idea to someone who does not understand its value, as they might mishandle it. It is often better to direct your dream or idea yourself to achieve better results.

Problem-Solving Attitude: A Better Approach

As an entrepreneur aiming to make a difference, you must focus on meeting the needs of consumers. The more you identify with their needs and strive to meet them, the greater your success will be in business. Therefore, do not start a business solely to make money. Let the needs of society be your central focus. Be an entrepreneur with a problem-solving attitude.
