MAN OF FEW WORDS

We often come across the expression “man of few words” in our day-to-day encounters, whether at work, in places of worship, or even in our neighborhoods. It has become a popular saying, and many men desire to be known by this title. But what is so special about using few words, and what significant role does it play in a man’s life?

The scriptures provide the answer: “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. A dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool” (Ecclesiastes 5:2-3, NIV). Notice it begins by advising, “Do not be quick with your mouth.” This implies avoiding careless speech and thinking before speaking.

The scripture continues with, “Do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God.” This suggests the importance of self-control, particularly in our emotional expressions, whether before God or man. Our emotions heavily influence our words, and exercising restraint ensures our words are meaningful and wise.

Ways to Speak Less
