Lust can be defined as an intense sexual desire. Having lust for one’s spouse is acceptable, as it helps sustain the union of a man and a woman within the confines of holy matrimony. However, when single individuals are lusting after each other, it is wrong. In other words, care should be taken to avoid falling victim to illicit sexual activities. Many people—teenagers and adults alike—fall prey to this, often with unfortunate consequences.
Before we proceed any further, it is crucial to acknowledge that parents play a significant role in ensuring their children do not become victims of premarital sex. A large percentage of those involved in this unholy act are teenagers. It is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children, provide godly training, and ensure that discipline is instilled in them from an early age. The scriptures say, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). What better way is there for a child than the way of the Lord?
Having discussed the role of parents in their children’s lives, let’s consider other measures to avoid illicit sex. These include: avoiding bad relationships and avoiding pornography.
Avoid Bad Relationships: Some relationships are detrimental to an individual’s well-being. It is meaningless and morally degrading to be involved in a sex-centered relationship. While it may appear pleasant and fulfilling initially, the end result is often disastrous. There is nothing as beneficial and morally uplifting as a good and godly relationship. Flee from bad relationships; flee from illicit sex, for the cost of it is indeed heavy.
Avoid Pornography: Pornography consists of writings or pictures intended to stimulate erotic feelings by portraying sexual activity. Any single individual who derives pleasure from this is simply fostering lust within themselves, waiting to explode in illicit sex. The scripture states, “Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Pornography presents you with the appearance of evil. So, for your own good, abstain from it.
Nothing is as beneficial as living a clean and decent lifestyle, free from illicit sex, and enjoying happiness for the rest of your life.
