We often boast of our love for Christ and even make lists of our exploits in His name, unaware that our love is far from perfect. Paul acknowledged this when he wrote: “That we may know the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19). Instead of being proud of our love for Him, we should focus more on His love for us.
Christ instructs us to “continue in His love.” The question then is: “How do we continue or stay in His love?” We remain in His love by obeying Him. He says, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love” (John 15:9-10). It is easy to say, “I love the Lord Jesus,” but the true test of that love is whether you remain in His love by obeying His word.
His love sustains us in times of trouble. When you are weary or facing difficulties, rest in His love. The truth is that nothing can separate you from His love when you yield yourself to Him in obedience. The Apostle Paul put it this way: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39).
Dear friends, in all your boasting, boast in His love for you: for therein lies your strength, hope, and comfort as a child of God.
